Ode To Grandpa ( A Story)

by Jean Mollett

Ode to Grandpa,
I knew it was over 10 years, since you
passed away. It was a little longer than
I thought, I ran across your In Remembance
pamphlet. I opened it up, I hadn't realized
how long Nov 10, 1988. This Nov 10, 03 will
make 15 yrs since you left. Timed passes by
so fast before you realize it. It sure doesn't
seem that long ago.

Ode to Grandpa,
this June 27, 03 was two years since Grandma
had passed away. It was a rough time for Mom,
when we were at the funeral home. Mom did
better than I expected this time. I had my
husband and my sister's boyfriend to stay
close to her. Specially when she went up to
the casket. I was right behind, not too far
from her. Cause Mom, almost collapsed at your
funeral, they had to catch her.

Ode to Grandpa,
thinking back the last time I saw you,
Grandpa. Mom, Dad, my hubby amd I came
for the weekend to visit, then headed home.
I got a call during the week, you were in
the hospital, doing better. Then before the
next weekend, I get a call, Grandpa died. Next
thing I knew, we were heading back to get
Mom and Dad, headed to Grandma's house. I'm
so thankful I have pictures from that weekend
before. I remember something, Grandpa would do
When I was a child. Grandpa stood tall, about 5'
8", 5"9" not quite 6' tall. He was a medium
built man, strong, long arms, legs.

Ode to Grandpa,
There were quite a few of us kids running
around. Grandpa would catch us close to him,
he'd stomp his big foot. And he'd say whata ya
want Gal. Or get out of here Gal, then ya hear
a chuckle under his breath. The last time I
saw him, I guess we surprised each other.
Cause, I wasn't standing too far from him and
he stomped his big foot. And said what ya want
Gal, well I didn't move. I stood my ground,
just smiled at him, I went to turn away.

Ode to Grandpa,
Then his big arm reached out around my neck,
pulled me up to him. Gave me a big hug, rubbed
my head, gave me a big smile. And said those
famous words. Then he walks away, I heard that
chuckle again. I got so used to Grandpa doing
this, I expected it each time. I knew it was
coming sooner or later. Oh how I long to see
his big foot stomp and hear those words. See
him with his big smile, even his chuckle as
he turns, walks away. I love you Grandpa and
Grandma, miss you so much. Oh the momories,
it hurts to think about them. But I love each
and everyone of them. Even if some weren't so
pleasant, but that's another poem or stories
to come.

Author's Note: This is just a rough draft, may need work yet. I finally got around to writing this story. I regret not going to see them more often. If ya have grandparents go see them as often as you can, cause someday they won't be around. I Love you, Grandpa.

About the Poet
I'm married. I am a grandmother. I love poetry, reading and writing it. Someone inspired me to start writing poetry again. That person is my Pastor.
