I Called It Burnt Candy

by Jean Mollett

My parents didn't allow us kids
to have sweets, candy hardly at
all. I remember Dad in the kitchen
one day, he was stirring up some
stuff in a suacepan. I saw him with
the sugar, other items. Wasn't sure
what he was making. I'ld try to get
a peek in the pan, Dad would shoo me
out of the kitchen. Mom would make
homemade cobblers once in a great
while, yum, yum.
I called it burnt candy.

Every chance I got, I'ld try to
sneak a peek. I finally got a
gilimpse of it. The stuff he was
cooking was turning brown a little,
oh it smelt so good. Then later I
noticed a different smell, I thought
he was burning it. It did kinda smell
like it was burning a little. I didn't
know but it was carmelizing, turning
brown, not burning. So I started
calling it burnt candy.
I called it burnt candy.

Oh it was so good, it was like
peanut brittle without the peanuts.
So tasty, so crunchy. Burnt candy.
I told my Dad what I named it, burnt
candy. He didn't get angry, he just
laughed, burnt candy, huh!!
I called it burnt candy.

Author's Note: I couldn't tell ya what all he used, in it. Didn't get to see it close enough. But it sure was so good.

About the Poet
I'm married. I am a grandmother. I love poetry, reading and writing it. Someone inspired me to start writing poetry again. That person is my Pastor.
