Spider Lilies - Tanka Collection

since my childhood days

these beauties my eyes beheld

my Mama grew them

spider lilies soon to bloom

bulbs from Gloria, my friend

much to my surprise

overnight sprouted three stems

anxiously I wait

giddy with heartfelt delight

my spider lilies to bloom

quite unexpected

some call them naked ladies

come spider lilies

I call them treasures from God

soon in my garden to bloom

bursting at the seams

can't contain my excitement

stems not one, but three

in great anticipation

my spider lilies you'll see

shutterbug's delight

can't wait to press the button

if the Lord's willing

this year they will bloom for me

exotic spider lilies

Author's note: To some, the sight of a spider lily blooming isn't so amazing or special.  For me, their presence in my garden delights me to the core.  They're such a vivid reminder of my Mama and my fond memories of her as she also took great pleasure in their most unexpected arrival in September each year.  I practically squealed with delight this evening as I looked with anticipation at the ground where I knew they would soon emerge and there they were as I had dreamt they would be!  They literally broke the ground and grew several inches overnight!  As yet, no blooms....still too soon, but those long slender stems will quickly grow, carrying with them my much anticipated blooms.  I moved a garden flag close to them, hoping to keep the dog and cats away from the immediate area of the bulbs.  Lord, please keep my dog and cats away from them!!!!  My friend Gloria, brought me the bulbs clear across the state from the NC coast last summer.  I planted them, but no blooms.  It's taken a whole year of waiting (or rather, 28 years to be exact since I last saw my Mama's lilies) to finally be so close to seeing my very own spider lilies bloom!

About the Poet
I grew up in rural North Carolina, married for 38 years to my best friend and soulmate, Allen, who retired almost 17 years ago from the Air Force after 24 years of service to our beloved America. We have a daughter, Ashley ( and son-in-law, Kris) and, a son, John, and, our two beautiful grand daughters, Amelia and Haley, and Isaac, our only grandson, all blessings from God. We have four cats; Mr. Peabody, Missy, aka Middle Kitty and Tabby, aka Little Kitty, and Gracie. I've seen a lot of hard times and God has always been here for me to see me through them. I am a vessel God can use to help others in need. If I could be described in one word, it would be that I am an encourager.
