Freddie's Last Ride

Freddie's Last Ride

today was Freddie's last ride
and today our Freddie died
he was a good and faithful friend
right up to the very end

that first day - can't forget that
small enough to fit in a baseball hat
Freddie and his sister - which one to choose
his loving eyes said - choose me and you can't lose

so tiny was he; the color of fawn
happy times we'd play on our front lawn

he grew big enough to fill that ball cap
trips from Illinois to N.C. he'd sit on my lap

in Colonial Williamsburg, we'd stroll down D.O.G. street
for him Duke of Gloucester Street was such a treat
he loved everyone and everyone loved him
he was always so friendly and slim and trim

such a perky little pup
snatch someone's cake and eat it all up
he loved to ride on the mower and the atv
catching the breeze and feeling free

trips back home to Granny Trail Lane
he loved this place so much, it was quite plain
swimming to the boat to be with the guys
my, oh my, how time really flies

our big white kitty
will miss our dog so itty bitty
at first she was smaller than he
we adopted her in her month number three
now she's queen of the place
she will miss Freddie's sweet little face

thirteen and a half the day he died
we all just cried and cried

it's easy to say - never again
hurts so bad - never again
to open one's heart
only to have it broken apart

in God's time, we'll have another pet
but our Chihuahua, Fred, we'll never forget

About the Poet
I grew up in rural North Carolina, married for 38 years to my best friend and soulmate, Allen, who retired almost 17 years ago from the Air Force after 24 years of service to our beloved America. We have a daughter, Ashley ( and son-in-law, Kris) and, a son, John, and, our two beautiful grand daughters, Amelia and Haley, and Isaac, our only grandson, all blessings from God. We have four cats; Mr. Peabody, Missy, aka Middle Kitty and Tabby, aka Little Kitty, and Gracie. I've seen a lot of hard times and God has always been here for me to see me through them. I am a vessel God can use to help others in need. If I could be described in one word, it would be that I am an encourager.
