A Cardinal in Winter
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

By Lucia Kiersch Haase
Other Poems by Lucia Kiersch Haase

A Cardinal in Winter

More subtlety than the wind, the morning breeze,

stirs beckoning bare branches of the trees,

inviting eyes like mine to surely seize

the lines that limn in praise to Heaven's way.

It is as if they bare their souls to pray

to Him who oversees another day,

December weather-sunny skies or gray,

expectant of a sure and timely Spring.

A cardinal perches on a bough to sing,

appreciative of rest from taking wing-

a Winter song concordantly, to ring.

Re-echoing throughout the woodland, heard

high notes to Him flow from the blood red bird,

in song as ancient as the Living Word.

(a Kierschal sonnet)
