The Cardinal
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

By Lucia Kiersch Haase
Other Poems by Lucia Kiersch Haase

In forest peace, there echoes now

in sharpened notes, from Winter's brow

a song of long familiar praise...

my eyes go searching bough to bough

into the woodland's frost filled maze-

into the morning's subtle haze

where gently, snow begins to fall-

the cardinal yet evades my gaze,

and yet, I heed the songbird's call-

the trees, the snow, cold air and all

as all Creation's beauty brings

a solitude meant to enthrall...

then suddenly appearing, sings

the cardinal...baring blood red wings-

in praise and honor of the King-

in praise and honor of the King.

(This is one of my Christmas poems.  It's an interlocking Rubayiat, like Robert Frost's
'Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.'  I was walking Cenney one day and heard
a cardinal in the woods close by, but couldn't see it...until it appeared after walking
Cenney further along.  That's partially what inspired this poem).

Also, I hope you all here at Wordchimes have a Merry Christmas and find
abundant blessings in His love,

Lucia
