I Heard Today...

I Heard Today

A wondrous song - a beauteous serenade-

I heard today, just as I stepped outside;

bright notes rang out from yard to hill to glade,

and all throughout the valley, far and wide.

I looked around in all the trees surrounding,

then followed notes that carried me along

as all the while, the melody's abounding-

it was to me a grand familiar song.

Then...high up in a tree, robust and proud,

a female cardinal, feathered most in gray

continued praising, singing towards a cloud

embellishing an anthem for the day...

or yet perhaps, an early celebration

of Spring, before the world and all Creation...

(What happened in the poem occured yesterday when I took my granddaughter's
 dog outside for a walk.  I had not heard a 'song' such as that and it immediately
 reminded me of a Spring day, though it's still very chilly here.) :)
