Still Life

Six coral-shaded friends
rosebuds yet closed in embryo
skirted by sprigs of Baby's Breath
stand promising on the sill
of my sixth floor
hospital window,
envoys of empathy in bouquet

the aroma, texture, image
generous in soothing

a painting given life
awakening spring spirit
in my roommate, Colette and me
as day-in-day out
we watch...

the miracle development
unveiling clustered delicacy in stages
developing glorious promise in petals
by nature's patience daily
the bloom more confident
to unfold her silky layers and dimensions
establish shape and size toward
debutante in Sunday best
with bursts of pastel
over-sized in maturity
imitating peonies

an array
highly-praised
by public admiration

the floral heads contrasting
the blue sky backdrop; grey walls

and I wonder at the palette and the plan
behind them

they are the color of sympathy
and promise,
inspirers to the ill

this fresh design
its model intricate,
beyond all scope
by human hand
at craft
