Close your Eyes

Close your eyes
to see -
the tension rising in the actor’s voice
the dilemma of Hamlet and his
shroud of Denmark ghosts.

Close your eyes
to see -
the actual earth, mountains, valleys
of an exiled poet’s homeland
as he stands before the
reading room crowd, pining for
the tenuous extension of his immigration
from the distance and his past ties.

Close your eyes
to hear
the soprano voices in the children’s choir
the last time a young boy will know his own voice
before the change.

To hear ... whispered nerves in anticipation
rustle through the group
this final performance moment....
after all those long rehearsals

to
... run your toes through wildflower meadows
feed the swans at Avon River
flee from war as sounded
in the trumpets and drums
mourning, in the bugles

to taste for true
the first pure water
from a new, clean, well in Ethiopia
donated from the funds your children worked
with their church Musical Production
is to raise

close your eyes
to smell
the ocean at Antigonish, Nova Scotia,
and its fresh pine-shadowed lake

let your lashes dust away
the familiar faces in the room
at readings, concerts, church,
or family storytelling,
to receive direction,

beyond
the cluttered surroundings of the setting...
slip into the painted scene the artist put before you
to see beyond and through

close your eyes
to see
