From the Mouths of Babes
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

Some bored, disrespectful kid
spying at the passer-by
on the sidewalk
surprised her with his voice
from a hide-out vantage point
in a parked truck

It was a sunny spring day
of the long weekend
as she strolled her regular route
enjoying her post-dinner cigarette
a few blocks from her home
when she heard,

“Hey lady -”

He sounded ten years-old or so
she barely turned to look
“Yeah- you, lady!”
she kept walking
not willing to humor his rudeness

-“Don’t you know
you shouldn’t smoke.
It’s bad for you.”

He shouted out in mocking tone
she wondered at his nerve.

His twinge of rebellious sarcasm
annoyed her
Why do kids love to catch adults
doing the wrong thing?
she asked herself.

Only this morning in the paper
her zodiac sign's message had read:
“heed advice from the mouths of babes”

Turning the corner,
she admitted to herself
she had no possible
good
rebuttal.
