For What It Profits a Man

"Because thou sayest, 'I am rich, and increased with goods, and have need of nothing'; and knowest not that thou art wretched, and miserable, and poor, and blind, and naked."

For What It Profits a Man

They've a house of finest fabrics:
Brocade couch and wingback chair,
Silken drapes, expensive carpet ~
But is *Jesus* welcome there?

The wife's shoes are all the latest,
With a brand name on each dress;
And the husband's suits are tailored ~
All about them spells Success.

But it's said she hits the bottle,
And sometimes *he* hits her, too,
And she's run out of excuses
When her skin is black and blue.

He's become a workaholic,
Goes in early and stays late;
When she nags, he always answers:
"Got a lot upon my plate."

She's convinced he has a girlfriend,
And she frequents bars to cry;
She spends money like it's water,
Anything that cash can buy.

They've a house with finest trappings:
Baby grand and leather chair,
Swimming pool, a fancy address ~
But is *Jesus* welcome there?

"For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world and lose his own soul? Or what shall a man give in exchange for his own soul?"
(Mark 8:36-37, KJV)

About the Poet
IN MEMORIAM I'm just a servant of the Lord that wants to magnify Him through poetry, and to cause others to focus on Him.
