EMANCIPATION T&T
Identity emancipation freed people
to love and build a new society
Out of those chains of slavery
ignorance and greed
To bond shackle free
in a country
Living side by side
one nation
From diverse heritage
now one common love
Love of self
respect for each other
Moved forward
toward Republic
Statement me
with a sense of worth
Product we
with a sense of pride
In Trinidad and Tobago
understanding liberation

N.B. Emancipation Day came about in the Caribbean in 1838; It was the rebellion of the slaves not the British abolitinist that brought about this freedom. Emancipation Day became an official holiday in T&T in 1985. Emancipation Day is observed as a holiday on August 1st in Trinidad and Tobago.
