"For everything in the world -- the desires of the flesh and the desires of the
eyes and the ostentationous of existence -- is not of the Father, but is of this
world." 1 John 2:16

Let me ask --

What do I seek? Desire?
What rushes through my soul?
Boils? Flames?
You or the world?

Your Love, Power, and Grace; or,
The world?
Fleeting and frail,
It's boast and brag?

Yet, the world is so magnetic!

The  world thrones the "I,"
It's reason rules. It's science judges.
The "I" is the monarch and
All bow to it's seat.

And, You Father,
Celled behind closed doors.

No! This is not what I seek.

The world  anointes the flesh,
Pours the oil of sale on lust.
Embraces it. Ratifies it. Honors it.

And, You Father,
Cry as Your children loose dignity and
Stoop to the empty.

No! This is not what I seek.

The world gods money and fame.
It adores and praises
The purse-size,
The star-size.
Success is the new "I.Q." test.

And, You Father,
Sorrow spreads through Your Triune Life
As Your creature-gifts
Turn to the weeds of greed.

I seek You, but not without You;
I desire You, but not without grace.
So, let Your Light
Carve Jesus into my seeking, then
The hymn of grace-words
Will lead me off the world's field  and
Distance my soul from the world's hard words.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
