The Valley

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for You are with me, Your rod and staff, they
comfort me." Psalm 23:4

Father,

The valley is narrow and steep,
I walk with toiling steps, and
A packhorse weighted soul.
The valley is ruthless.
I cower, back bent.

The mountain's brow is high,
Cloud covered, cliff guarded;
Alarm and panic tighten
Around hope's neck. and
I am POWERLESS, barrelled.

But, Yes but,
You are NOT!
No, You are NOT!
You are POWER, Your Staff.

So,
I open my hand to grip Your Staff;
I clutch It's Throbbing  Power and
Stand straight before despair,
It's despotic swagger.

Yes,
With eyes looking up,
I see a Path, a clear Path,
Free of cloud and cliff
And feet cutting stones.

Yes,,
With feet now shod,
With legs now hard,
I walk upright this Mountain Path --
Your Will.

Now,
With You with me,
The Mountain makes sense, and

My soul finds ease

NOTE: written while experiencing "Sandy.".

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
