"... they opened their treasures and gave him gifts ...."
Matthew 2:11

Tired of a sand-life,
Tired of in-words
Of servitude and strife,
I set out to find joy, soul joy, and
This grew into my star.

I sought this star:
Walked through the false lights
Of city nights, through slush ice,
Always chased by the night's people --
Soul-muggers, soul-hawks,
Seeking to rob and market my soul.

I sought this star.
Walked through desert darkness,
Wishing for bat's eyes,
Always finding emptiness --
A meatless world without feed.

Then, I still can't believe this,
I came upon something like a stable,
There were animals like an ox and donkey,
But, also a BABY!!!
Yes, a Baby, an Infant lying on straw.

I asked: "Who is this Baby?"
The young mother,
With a smile that melts, and
Eyes that welcome,
Whispered: "Jesus!"

Jesus? I wondered, and
As I looked into His Eyes,
I saw gates!
At the time, I did not understand,
But, this Infant, in my life,
Opened a new world for me.

I looked around,
Saw three strangely dressed men
Who had gifts for the Infant --
Gold, frankinsense and myrrh.
Yes, I should give a gift, but, what?
My pockets are empty and
I am only a joy-searcher and sinner.

Then, this struck me:
I do have a gift --
My will, this is my treasure;
But also my mind and heart.
Yes, I felt this in my blood.

As I gave my gift, my treasure
The sun of joy flamed and warmed
My cold and lonely soul. To this day,
This joy is a stream murmuring
In my soul.

.All due to the "gift" and
The "Infant's Grace."

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
