Footing

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,
The evidence of things not seen." Hebrews 11:1

Father,

Faith
Is the grip of the soul's feet
To stand on and to walk on
The uphill, the hard and the rough
Through the God journey.

Faith
In You Father,
Who is the Hand on my soul;
In Jesus, the Son,
Who is the Compass for my soul; and
In the Spirit, Holy,
Who is the start for my soul;
All frame my flesh
Into Your Wish for me.

Just as
The "Yes" of Abraham,
Who, with a nod of obedience, and
Not hearing the hoarse voice of doubt,
Walked to a land he did not know --
His soul's feet gripped on faith.

Just as
The "Yes" of Moses,
Who chose God's people,  not the Pharaoh's,
And, with the sturdy walk of trust,
Crossed through the waters of the Sea --
His soul's feet gripped on faith.

Just as
The "Yes" of Mary,
The unlettered teen mother
From a small hill town, but whose
Brilliant womb, lettered with humility's grace,
Throned the God-Man,
Birthed Our Saviour to defeat the world's folly--
Her soul's feet gripped on faith.

Just as
The "Yes" of Jesus,
To the spiny thorns prick
As it goaded blood;
To the whips beat and lash,
As they welted the Sacred Back;
To the scornful iron
Trained into His Hands and Feet; and
To the spear that challenged His life. and
Opened His side that we may enter His Heart --
He IS the "Footing."

Father,

Faith's inner fix frees my soul
From fickle talk,
From sham joys, and
From dummy truths.

So, I pray
As I say: "Yes"
To my stand and walk,
Let faith be my "footing.'

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
