"...although now you may have to suffer various trials...."
1 Peter 1:6

If the soul is a mine,
It's powers form the ore,
The soul's talents:
To love, know and decde --
All gold-gifts from You, Father.

Through time,
Alloys mix with the ore,
Dross, inferior metals:
Envies and resentments,
Lust and doubts,
Greed for money and power,
Soul-darkness --
All hold tyrant-tight to the ore.

How free the ore? Cleanse of alloys?
Much like the smelting of gold:
Through the blaze of trials and temptations,
The soul's fire and furnace, and
Through the Forge and Hammer
Of Your Will's Words.

If "Yes" to the alloys, "No" to Your Will's Words,
Faith shrinks through this self-flattery;
If "Yes" to Your Will's Words, "No" to the alloys,
Faith grows though this self-honesty.

The alloys melt into the air,
Their debate with fire is over,
They yield to the Forge and Hammer --

The soul is no longer profaned, but
Now is Your precious prize.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
