What If...?

What If...?

What if I had been a disciple

kneeling with our blessed Lord

in the Garden of Gethsemane?

If I had prayed instead of sleeping,

my untimely intrusions

would have served the enemy.

For I would have prayed like this,

"God, please don't take Him from us,

without Him we will surely perish.

We are not ready for the task

that His death requires of us.

Without Him, Rome will flourish."

Peter was geared up for one fight.

I likely would have fled the scene

without passion nor trusting grace.

At that moment, struggle was futile.

The harder fight was the praying,

standing firm, while God set the pace.

How then shall we pray today?

Watching and persevering is central

at this juncture in our own history?

What if we chose to pray like Christ,

"Father, not my will but thine be done."

Would your Spirit within reveal mystery?

What if we finally acknowledged

our penchant to take charge is distrust

and your Word is our essential sword.

What if we tracked you, God, ev'ry moment

in whatever tests we face as a nation?

What if we discovered, the battle belongs to You, Lord?

About the Poet
Growing older with some pains and discomfort, graying hair, glasses, partial plate and hearing aids but with complete assurance of my eternal domain. Saved by choice by Gods free grace by Jesus life, death and resurrection. Born and bred in the Bluegrass State for 24 years, I crossed the Ohio River and became a Hoosier forever thereafter until that time God calls me to my heavenly home. Christian for fifty-five plus years. Church musician and SS teacher for most all of my Wednesdays and Sundays. Public school teacher for thirty-six school terms; retired with a class now of three grandchildren off and on during the week. Wife for half my life to the same superman. Mama to two unique sons. Mother-in-law to a fine daughter; Nana to one darling girl and two handsome guys. God has blessed me abundantly; thank you, Father. God quiets my hackles; God quickens my heart; God quells my hunger. Blessed be His holy name.
