From Pewside

Weekly sermons on church growth are like spam
forcing me to build a “junk sermon” dam.
Three hundred folk come to worship their Lord
how many leave feeling guilty or bored
missing the nurture of hearing God’s Word?

Those who reach out dread the repetition.
Those who won’t go hear the implication
they’re second class in participation.
What of that third group who came by invite
from a church visitor last Thursday night?

Who enters this week yearning to worship?
Who eagerly holds out an empty cup?
Who needs the filling only Christ can meet?
Who welcomes a place where he takes a seat
and finds there a God who’s rich and complete?

When we lift Jesus up, He’ll draw folks in;
any other goal is as good as sin.
God’s Word shows the Way, the how and the when.
Worship should focus so all groups may find
passion to do daily what ‘s on God’s mind.

Philippians 2: 5-11  “Let this mind be in you, which
was also in Christ Jesus… (read the rest in your
own Bible).

About the Poet
Growing older with some pains and discomfort, graying hair, glasses, partial plate and hearing aids but with complete assurance of my eternal domain. Saved by choice by Gods free grace by Jesus life, death and resurrection. Born and bred in the Bluegrass State for 24 years, I crossed the Ohio River and became a Hoosier forever thereafter until that time God calls me to my heavenly home. Christian for fifty-five plus years. Church musician and SS teacher for most all of my Wednesdays and Sundays. Public school teacher for thirty-six school terms; retired with a class now of three grandchildren off and on during the week. Wife for half my life to the same superman. Mama to two unique sons. Mother-in-law to a fine daughter; Nana to one darling girl and two handsome guys. God has blessed me abundantly; thank you, Father. God quiets my hackles; God quickens my heart; God quells my hunger. Blessed be His holy name.
