Lessons from Qoheleth

”All things are pointless”, wrote Solomon,
wisest man on earth’s sod.
”All things are vain unless
all things center ‘round God.”

There’s a time to judge what man has learned
though at times knowing brings grief.
Pleasure has its rightful place
but even joy wants relief.

While great homes, rich foods can satisfy,
salvage may come during hard times.
When man seeks God from his youth on,
he avoids some difficult climbs.

A long life with a large family
is aspiration worthy of thought,
meaningful - when blessed with love and hope
useless - when godly truth is not sought.

A job may be man’s key to esteem.
Ample wages balanced with rest
can be managed in countless ways
to do good - or better - or best.

There is a right time and a right place
to do things under the sun.
Selfish living is charade
dawn's advent finds it undone.

.

Shine on, bright Qoheleth, cast your light,
scorn the futile façade.
The whole of life calls man
to fear and obey God.

*Qoheleth is the Hebrew word for the book of Ecclesiastes,
translated the Preacher.  This poem is dedicated to Darrick

Holloman, preacher-to-be.

About the Poet
Growing older with some pains and discomfort, graying hair, glasses, partial plate and hearing aids but with complete assurance of my eternal domain. Saved by choice by Gods free grace by Jesus life, death and resurrection. Born and bred in the Bluegrass State for 24 years, I crossed the Ohio River and became a Hoosier forever thereafter until that time God calls me to my heavenly home. Christian for fifty-five plus years. Church musician and SS teacher for most all of my Wednesdays and Sundays. Public school teacher for thirty-six school terms; retired with a class now of three grandchildren off and on during the week. Wife for half my life to the same superman. Mama to two unique sons. Mother-in-law to a fine daughter; Nana to one darling girl and two handsome guys. God has blessed me abundantly; thank you, Father. God quiets my hackles; God quickens my heart; God quells my hunger. Blessed be His holy name.
