Death

Death

Death you've come to visit again
In a most unexpected way
And shocked me at your presence
As I saw you face to face
You steal the warmth of living
You cold and heartless one
And momentarily I'm taken aghast
And absolutely stunned

For you weren't called to visit
At such a time as this
I expected you at an older age
These thoughts I couldn't dismiss
I retreated in horror
O death what had you done
You robbed me of a treasure chest
In the taking of my son

For sure you sent me reeling
I had to leave the scene
And come to grips with the reality of
How surreal you're presence had been
But then grace gripped me tightly
I felt my Father's arms of love
Who comforted me instantaneously
And reminded me... "he's up above!"

So death you're a defeated foe
Yes you can shake us to the core
But I live with that glorious thought
One day you shall be no more
So pace around with bragging rights
As you continue on in your destruction
But greater is He who lives within me
The Lord Jesus my Resurrection!

And everyone who knows Him
As their personal Lord and Saviour
We'll live again in celebration with
The ones with whom with lived here
So with that thought in the forefront
I continue on in my life of faith
Living with the strength of the Lord
Who was "Victorious" over death!

About the Poet
I came to know the Lord as my personal Saviour in January of 1972. I was married on Oct 21,1966 to my wife Linda who also loves the Lord. We have ten children and now twenty-four grand children. In Aug 2012 we got the announcement of the birth of our first GREAT grand child (a baby girl). I was thrilled to find others of like precious faith and belief in Jesus Christ. Hallelujah! What a Savior! I am presently living in Champion, Alberta, Canada but we are originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada. That is where the poem Canadian Tribute to America was birthed. One Sunday as I walked across the city on my way to church I came to the top of a hill and looked across at Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. After watching the events of the Sept 11 tragedy it was weighing on my heart and mind and the Lord gave me these words. We came to Calgary and when my oldest daughter saw this poem she said, Dad, whats this? and I said a poem and she replied Dad, thats not a poem , thats a song and she then went to the piano and began to sing and play it. The result of which turned into a song entitled, A Canadian Tribute to America which she recorded on CD. garyjamessmith2005@yahoo.ca
