Distractions

"I want you to do whatever will help you to serve the Lord best, with as few distractions as possible." 1 Corinthians 7:35

Father,

In prayer,

I lift anchor,

Leave my world's shore, and

Ship through the Open Sea --

You.

My inward eyes

Sight Your World,

Long with desire, but

My day's world lures and

It's woo too often wins.

Yes,

Distractions decoy and

Temptations bully --

They cheat my soul of You,

Starve my soul.

I listen

To my life's worries,

To my world's puzzles,

To my demon's drones,

And not You.

How cruel to my soul.

Father,

When I pray,

Steep my soul in grace

So not market to the hucksters

Of distraction and temptation.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
