Armor

"Put on the armor of God ... to stand firm against the tactics
of the Devil." Ephesians 6:11

Father,

Plate my soul with armor, so
To protect from the Invader
Who wars to seize me and
Take me as a slave.

Fix the Belt of Jesus on my soul's waist,
Fasten with the buckle of His Truth -- Love.
Then, girth with love, I will stand my ground.

Warward,

On goes the Breastplate of Jesus,
To cover my soul's heart, my life giving spirit,
With the metal of sincerity and honor and
The Royal insignia of Jesus, His Standard --
The Cross, drawn in blaze red.

Warward,

Shod with the Boots of Jesus, tied tight with humility,
I will walk through the killing fields,
Firm footed and safe, filled with the mettle of zeal,
Free of self and fear.

Warward

Holding the Shield of Jesus -- Trust,
I will be skilled in warding off
The fire-arrows of the foe, so often
Shoot from the bow of dejection.

Warward,

Wielding the Sword of Jesus -- Grace
For He is the Grace-Shaper,
A keen blade, never sheath sleeping, then
I will be powered to defend.

Warward,

Wearing the Helmet of Jesus -- Faith,
I will cover the vulnerable in my soul:
The doubt-bitten,
The doubt-wounded.

Father,
Before the wiles and taunts and boasts
Of the Shadowy-One,
I will  form a shield-wall with Your pilgrim family,
Especially when attacked in my dark nights.

Let my armor be polished by Light,
The Light of Jesus, leaving
The sheen of His Rising,
His stepping over death,
The Resurrection.

About the Poet
I am 79 years of age. For the past nine years I have been retired, after forty years, from the field of alcoholism and drug abuse in New York City. I am married and we have two grown sons and two grand-sons. My life changed through a grace-experience in 1967. Writing Christian prayers is a particular interest of mine. This came about by a growing awareness of the spiritual in recovery from addictions. I choose, intellectually and emotionally, to believe the Triune God of the Sared Scriptures as my Healer.
