Look Up, My Countrymen

Look Up, My Countrymen

a quatorzaine in fourteeners

I'm way down here, once more ensnared in pits of reckless choice.
And did you hear me thrash about, unmindful of Your voice,

when first I picked that shovel up, a shovel of revolt?
when I began to tunnel down, the tunnel of a dolt?
Like Peter long ago, I plunged; the beast then sifted me.
And Lord, I feel Your hands on mine, again You've lifted me.
Look up, my countrymen, I've found God's mercy, full and free.
We find ourselves too often on the frayed end of our rope,
Look up, my countrymen, the God we trust fulfills our hope.
We worry 'bout such worldly things and think we've lost the fight
but pray we must and wait on God with patience as our light.
My Lord, I see Your advent bright in rays of morning sun,
a sign of Your abundant grace, my doubts have come undone.
Look up, my countrymen, and see - redemption has begun.

About the Poet
Growing older with some pains and discomfort, graying hair, glasses, partial plate and hearing aids but with complete assurance of my eternal domain. Saved by choice by Gods free grace by Jesus life, death and resurrection. Born and bred in the Bluegrass State for 24 years, I crossed the Ohio River and became a Hoosier forever thereafter until that time God calls me to my heavenly home. Christian for fifty-five plus years. Church musician and SS teacher for most all of my Wednesdays and Sundays. Public school teacher for thirty-six school terms; retired with a class now of three grandchildren off and on during the week. Wife for half my life to the same superman. Mama to two unique sons. Mother-in-law to a fine daughter; Nana to one darling girl and two handsome guys. God has blessed me abundantly; thank you, Father. God quiets my hackles; God quickens my heart; God quells my hunger. Blessed be His holy name.
