The Smell of the Soil

Riding a tractor in the early Spring
Plowing the soil from morning till night
Turning furrow after furrow of sod
Brings the smell of Earth's soil

It is the smell of labor
The sweat of the rider
Steering the tractor,
Guiding the plow

The smell of fresh soil
Of clay, silt, or loam
The smell of fertilizer
From the barnyard or bag

The smell of fresh grain
In the farmer's mind
Of corn, alfalfa or timothy hay
Or fields of vegetables of various kind

The smell of the soil
Is the smell of sowing
Of sunshine and rain
Realizing his labor is not in vain

About the Poet
I am a retired educator. Now 85 years of age. I live in Maryland. I am the father of three ladies and thirteen grandchildren. Four grandchildren now married. I have two great grandsons, Koi Jon and Quinn Manu and a great granddaughter,Sephira Jade. Poems are an expression of how I think and feel. Variety in either case!
