Nicodemus

Nicodemus

Nicodemus tried all night,
But could not make the words sound right,
A second birth? How can that be?
One birth on earth's enough for me.

If heaven comes at second birth,
Then heaven has no place on earth,
If second birth comes after death,
Then why on earth did God give breath?

Since I am born of flesh and bone,
And live by senses that I hone,
I understand through every sense,
We're students of experience.

Hence, of this water, spirit stuff,
It's airy thought, enough's enough,
Our nature's made for down to earth,
And earth gives blood and flesh one birth.

And, yet, I heard him clearly say
Unless I'm born again today,
God's Kingdom surely will not be,
Oh, rabbi, solve this mystery!

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
