The Written Word

I open up some books and find
The pedagogues who school a mind
With do’s and don’ts are justified
By laws upon which men relied.

But laws aren’t fixed throughout the years,
Perfecting man stays in arrears
While changes to behavior’s code
Still fail to pay the debt that’s owed.

And newer laws will also fail,
‘Ere more or less go off to jail,
I can’t imagine, though, a town
With rules and laws not written down.

However, dare I to suggest
The lawless man won’t quit the quest
To break the law despite what’s known
About the consequences shown.

I open up another Book
That offers man a different look,
The words are written on the heart,
Both lawful, lawless have that part.

That part was made by Him who gave
To hearts the Word in words that save,
The universal softened part
Will ease a stiff and hardened heart.

Massage the heart with living words,
Here’s milk and honey, manna, curds,
The promise of eternity
With Faith, Hope, Love to simply be.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
