Paul and Silas Sing Praises in Jail

The dark and ever pressing in of night

Wrapped Ďround the silence in the prison cell

Where Paul, because he preached Christís saving light,

And Silas chained with prisoners did dwell.

A Spirit note chimed out within their hearts;

They raised their eyes and gazed up through the dark

Into the Spirit Christ alone imparts

To light that flame from manís one hopeful spark.

The note raised from their hearts unto their lips

And rang out glorious in songs of praise

Until their locks and chains shattered in rips

And walls of stone shook, trembled, and lay razed.

††† The song of God no one ever contains

††† Within the pressing darkness of manís chains.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
