      Elijah the Tishbite

A love for God, a human fear,
My heart wants one, the other’s near,
He sends the fire and sends the rains,
His covenant of Truth sustains,
Yet I lie down beneath the tree
And beg for death to fall on me.

Alone am I to live His Word,
I speak with faith all that I’ve heard
And keep His light from falling dim
By those who’ve walked away from Him,
So faithful He has been to me,
He nourishes beneath the tree.

On Horeb where He once passed by
I heard His voice call from the sky,
He gave another to move on
And spread His light at each day’s dawn,
If now, I pray, my work is done,
My heart forever lives with one.

Then up in windswept whirlwind flight,
Up to eternal glory’s height
Upon a chariot of fire
Ablaze with love’s divine desire,
A flash across the golden sky,
Up… up… to rise to Him on high.

No mortal eyes have yet espied
Such brightness pure and rarified!
Oh hallowed air! Oh breath so light!
Oh spirit sanctified and bright!
Immortal life! Eternal shared!
Oh love in holy union paired!

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
