Retired? What Will You Do?

      Retired? What Will You Do?

"What will you do?” I have been asked,
And not to take too light the task,
“I’ll work on that,” is what I said-
An action plan formed in my head!

I’ll formulate objectives, goals,
I’ll wear the hats of many roles
And measure each and ev’ry plan
With outcomes like a workingman.

Determined to be resolute,
And find success at this pursuit,
I’ll also ask those now retired
And learn what duties are required.

Old Dan came in to wish me well,
He sat, we chatted for a spell,
“So, Dan,” I asked, “What should I do
Now that I am retired like you?”

“Well,” he said, “when I awake
Each day, a simple stock I take
Of all the gifts my heart beholds
From Him whose bright new morn unfolds.”

“I wish I’d done that years ago
When I was busy making dough,
But you’re a smarter man than I,
No need for me to testify.”

“Yea, sure,” I said, “You’re wrong and right,
Upon my plan, you’ve shed much light,
It’s time I threw my plan away
And lived His plan for ev’ry day.”

As of 7/1/15, I am retired.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
