Life and Death

She holds him
Close to her breast
'neath the sparse shade
Of a desert scrub.
And the baby cries.

Beneath the blazing sun
An old man
Back bent from a life of hard work
Pushes his shovel
Into the shimmering, golden earth.
And the baby cries.

Amid the heap
Of swarming flies, filth and garbage
Young boys search
For their next meal.
And the baby cries.

Purple rays of dusk
Spill an illusion of colors upon
The shifting, wind-whipped sand.
And the baby cries.

Day is ending
The old man rests
Young boys fill their hungry bellies
Darkness is nigh.
And the baby cries.

In the cold, moonlight mist
Still clutching him to her breast
The night is silent.
And the Mother cries.

Gynith

About the Poet
I still have 4 grandsons and love to write. Although it hasn't been easy (nothing worth while ever is), on June 1 Floyd and I will celebrate our 57th wedding anniversary.
