Towards the Summit

A traveller ascends

the stone stairs of the sanctuary

as snow falls like a flock of birds

through the forest of his bones,

stark and swift beaked

deep into the frozen fields

ripe with the worlds tattered coat.

Quiet, inward, closer to the sun

a radiant light burns bright

into the surrounding plains

and bitter exterior, beyond the howling

wind, the frozen tundra, the sharp

cuts of plummeting voices that echo

from the mountain with its ashes of stars-

to the summit,

where the lights of the village

appear as fireflies in a lost brook,

and the whispering conversation of planets

fall like blossoms in a summer breeze.
