The One

In the balcony

he listens to the tapping of canes
against allegory floors,
and watches the drama unfold
through the deepest of illusions

and beneath the stage
a ventriloquist drops a voice inside a box.
The world speaks. Always the voice of sand,
of time running in veins through the play.

And the end is real, not just misguided dogs
but the fall of skin and the boiled
bones of forgotten songs.

The tragedy is the same each night.

He walks through the smoke of cigars and dim lights-
no one notices.
