Whispering Walls

Whispering Walls

The old house,heavy
with layers of white paint,
nudges the slate sidewalk,
and speaks of my ancestors'
daily ablutions,and holds
echos in its walls
of two voices that gave me life.

I fantasize walking
on the long porch,
and the door being
flung open at my footsteps-
two people so happy
so happy to see me,from
many turnpikes away.

The house inside, graced
with very old "newly-wed" furniture,
china, silver,
and antique tin ceilings,
whispers, "you should have
come home to spend
his last Christmas with him."
