R.S.V.P.

Sorry, but I must decline
your ominous soiree-

the invitation was unexpected
and the hours are pressed that day.

I must paint dawn's new clouds
a bright cerise with a purple edge,

and soften green fields with a yellow stroke
where they nuzzle against the hedge.

Then hitch a ride with a sparrow
to a secret water hole

to picnic with the bumble bees,
and a dog that shares my soul.

At dusk. I will meet Chopin and Liszt
as they wait on the ivory keys

to show my hands the stars and moon
shining through the trees.

Sorry, I must decline your ominous soiree,
the invitation was unexpected,
and the hours are pressed that day.
