The Trunk

The Trunk

Their fingerprints and DNA are on all the pictures
in the trunk, and sometimes when I look out
the window to see the setting sun, I can hear them
behind me, rustling to make new heat in their bodies-
just for a moment, as they form "we love you"
on lips long dried, straining to be heard.

Tears surprise after all these years- the missing
never stops- I whisper"come back", but the loves
that lived so long ago would cringe
at our world today. So we give them shelter
in beating hearts and a trunk that speaks
of goodbyes on a snowy January day.
