World War 2

World War 2

Nylons were scarce
when Winston spoke

of Britain's "finest hour"
while the days raged

all night from lethal
belligerent bursts

birthed in the sky. Love
was so urgent when life

hung over a precipice,
dangling, white knuckled

on boats and trenches.
You can yet smell it, taste it

decades later, when the band
plays,"White Cliffs of Dover,"

or "We'll Meet Again,"-
songs of those frantic years,

when Jews were gassed,
and nylons were scarce.
