Ash Safety

ASH SAFETY

My secret sin a sulphur match,
flared up in one three second
conflagration
against slow-falling curtains
of eternity,
ignited nothing,
gave no lasting light.

But what has burned
will never burn again.

The tiny stick remains in my hand,
with it’s charcoal tip
I draw and write from safety
in a circle of ashes.
