Fall Haven

Fall Haven

Ancient as a morning song
as green cut stems
of willow wand
braided rope-woven
slender loves that draw
my river along
down golden beam
now withering
draw me

Floating year's leaves scattered
grievings I out-race
past city and farm

another Fall of leaf
of Rome
from grace to grace
another place
another face
another arm

So river runs
so stone is worn
by love that wears
the mountains down
sternly bears me
silently
by flood by fire
by blood and sword

til harboured safely by the sea
sung to by the wavelet word
Love comes stepping crest to crest
to welcome sailors
even me
to haven of eternal rest.
