WHITE STONE

My river flows pouring over rock,
curls back on itself in celebrations
of foam and laughter;

sand collects along the shore,
near water dances crystal clear
in shallows over coloured stones,
so many colored stones,
all tumbled smooth and round.

Deeper water flows transparent green
with flickers of cosmos blue.

An army of cotton wood trees
line the river’s edge,
some look battle-worn,
gnarled roots sinking into the dirt,
others sample the water,

they crouch there,
sipping watchfully,
polished stones still gripped
in wooden fingers.

I kneel listening among them,
seeking rumours of the white stone
I read about in a book;

so many stones in the universe,
I am told one is engraved,
from before this river began,
with my real name.
