Joy to the World

Is anything so warm
as a northern downtown
coffee shop
at Christmas?

Students home from school
families re-united
shoppers
scarved and mittened
trudge on sidewalk snow
past steam-frosted windows
bear merry burdens

Animated chattering patrons
thaw out
over hot chocolate
or coffee
weave old stories with new
lean on small tables
puddles of melted snow
gather on the floor

Coloured window lights blink
radio choirs sing
bells chime
endeavor
to repeat the sounding joy
remembering the birth
of the Unknown Saviour

Can Christmas
stay like this
forever?
