Mystery Trail

Trees in brilliant splendor hide the little trail,

Where incandescent spider webs, so gossamer and frail,

Stretch between the tall dried weeds to shimmer in the sun,

Low upon the skyline; this day is almost done.

It barely made its presence known; so hidden on that day;

Disguised in brambles, brush ‘n leaves a little trail did lay.

It beckoned like a mystery to see how it would end,

Meandering in dappled light and curved around a bend.

There a small pond waited with cattails on the shore,

Lily pads and dragonflies and frogs by the score.

I worked my way through grasses high to find the trail again,

Hidden ‘neath the tall oak trees it beckoned like a friend.

Winding through the forest with the smell of fall so sweet,

The only sound I noticed was dried leaves beneath my feet.

I shuffled as I walked among these leaves of red and yellow,

As autumn filled my senses and left me feeling mellow.

Bird song soon grew quiet, t’was at the end of day,

Evening critters scurried, coming out to play.

So on I walked as shadows fell as daylight soon departed.

The mystery of this little trail?  It ended where it started!
