Midnight Mourning
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

Other Poems by Connie Hinnen Cook

She visits him at midnight
when no one ever sees,
She walks the path by streetlight
which filters through the trees.

Arriving at his grave-site,
she kneels beside his stone;
The moon her one companion,
she talks to him, alone.

"It's mommy, sweetheart ~ mommy!
you have no cause for fear,
I'll chase away your nightmares ~
you're safe now, mommy's here!

"Look here! I brought some cookies!
and here's some ginger-ale!
I'll sit beside you all night long
and tell a fairytale.

"Hush now, 'cause mommy loves you!
oh, baby ~ please don't cry!
I'll stay until it's daylight,
and sing a lullaby."

She's brought his favorite playthings:
red truck and toy giraffe,
She makes up silly stories
and listens for his laugh.

She brushes down the blades of grass
as though smoothing his bed,
And with her hand upon the stone
she leans to kiss his head.

Imaginary blankets
are pulled to tuck him in,
She reaches out to touch his cheek
and feel his velvet skin.

With dawn's cruel intrusion
she whispers a goodbye ~
"Sh-h-h, mommy will be back tonight,"
she leaves, and starts to cry.

The folks in town avoid her,
they point at her and stare;
That's why she comes at midnight ~
midnight...when no one's there.

"But I would not have you
to be ignorant, brethren,
concerning them which are asleep,
that ye sorrow not,
even as others which have no hope.
For if we believe that
Jesus died and rose again
even so them also
which sleep in Jesus
will God bring with Him."

(I Thessalonians 4:13-14 KJV)

About the Poet
IN MEMORIAM I'm just a servant of the Lord that wants to magnify Him through poetry, and to cause others to focus on Him.
