Poetry Notions

I'd like to write of eagle wings
And things that soar on high;
Of "murmuring pines and hemlocks,"
Or the twinkle in a pixie's eye.

But every time I take a glance
At the words I chance to pen,
To my surprise, I realize,
I've philosophized again!

It's not that I intend to preach,
Or give advice, or try to teach,
But when I get the urge to write,
What does emerge seems like a speech!

So listen,
All you poets, divine!
I'll read your poems,
If you'll read mine.

I'll jealously savor, of yours, you see,
Each flow'ry adjective,
And hope one day, you'll come to heed,
The sermons that I give.

Now, excuse me, friend~
I have to close.
My soap-box calls,
And I must
Compose!
