Wild Roses

Wild Roses

Wild pink roses grow on a broken fence
And creep along the ground.
The house is enshrouded in brush,
Songs of a meadowlark the only sound.

Once a family lived in the house.
It was filled with laughter and love.
Tall pink roses guarded the fence
Gathering strength from the sun above.

Storms caused their heads to bow,
Wind floated their petals on air,
They were covered by blankets of snow
And trampled by those who lived there.

But each spring the roses were back
From their bed in the earth below;
Gracing the table in a fruit jar vase,
Their beauty enhanced by candle glow.

The family is gone now - pink roses grow wild,
But they really don't seem to know.
They still guard the fence with the same gentle care
That they did long, long ago.

About the Poet
I still have 4 grandsons and love to write. Although it hasn't been easy (nothing worth while ever is), on June 1 Floyd and I will celebrate our 57th wedding anniversary.
