Fall Routine

Leaves feather-fall yellow and red
racks of tiny chimes
ring undulating overhead

Down great halls
of clouded skies,
formations of geese
organise
with bickering cries

Bears raid fields of ripened grain
triumphant, exhausted
salmon spawn,
eagles sky-falling claim
fish in razor claw
who will never leave home again

The wood-pile
in my door-yard grows,
each day sooner the sun
slips home,
each night lower
down the mountain--
snows

Sleepy world slips off
bright summer clothes,
shrugs into gray flannel gown
stirs the fire,
settles down.
