The Call

Flattery sang
his secret song,
and I came.
He hadn't mistaken my name.

Smiling, he girded me
with chain
to a ceremony of corporate sighs---
breezes blown
darkly down halls
of doom--
prisoners breathing
in another room.

"Please me" he smiled
with twinkling eye,
"Please me."
"Live to please me,
or die."

Seven long years I tried,
I tried,
then died.

Resurrected,
I live
on the other side---
