Because You Knew

When the world was young,
before the setting
of the first sun,
you knew my name.

Before terror like a tiger,
slathering fang,
leaping, lips curled,
was loosed upon the world,
you knew my name.

Before the plague of cancer,
or poison cloud,
melanoma of the spirit,
torn celestial shroud,
beginning of the end,
---before it came,
you knew my name.

My benediction,
Jesus-God, you've always been,
accepting love,
your offering,
I see you now,
fresh from astonishing
friends in Emmaus,
walking along the river,
through the park.

I will turn,
despite the falling dark,
and follow you..
