Ask and You Shall Receive

Ask and You Shall Receive

I ask from You too frequently,
And grant to You too few,
Yet, once again upon each knee,
Request is what I do.

Oh Lord, this wanting I don’t lack,
I know it’s nothing new,
Old thirst, old hunger, brings me back
With empty bowl to You.

The cupboard of my spirit’s bare,
My well has dried up, too,
I long to breathe that purer air,
Renew me, Lord, renew.

Like those You healed who couldn’t see,
The lame who walked anew,
The dead You raised, You set us free
From want, no debt is due.

My spirit poor in self takes heed,
And so, I know it’s true,
Before I ask, all that I need,
Is given me by You.

About the Poet
Husband, father, grandfather, and each title is my joy. As a youth, poetry was a means to express the inexpressable. I was attracted to (and still am) the beauty and brevity of verse. All flows out from God, and like a proper prayer, can flow back.
