Reaching Out,
Viewed Last 24 Hours: 1 time

By Eleanor W. Cunningham

Reaching Out

Thirteen elderly patients in wheelchairs
Crowded the room, each in silent isolation
None could communicate with another,
Until today.

In a chair close enough to touch
My blind friend's chair
Sat a lady in pink sweater.
Hearing Bernie talking
In her lonely soliloquy
The pink lady reaches out
To touch Bernie, then
Speaks a few unintelligible
Words to her.

Bernie feels the touch, hears the words
Turns, and in her own
Unique syntax
Kindly directs her splendid monologue
To her friend in reply.

One lonely human being
Hoping to make contact,
Desperately reaching out
To another.

How often we, too,
In our own way
Reach out to another,
Always hoping
For that kind reply.
